Ask Kim: Adrift in Advice

Dear Kim,

I divorced my husband last year after 15 years of marriage. It’s been a roller coaster to say the least – and I’m just now getting to the point where I can even hear the thoughts in my own head clearly.  When it comes to money, though, my friends keep giving me conflicting financial advice after my life changed dramatically. I know they mean well, but seriously, this is a lot to handle. How do I know who to listen to … or if I should be listening to anyone at all?

Sincerely,

Adrift in Advice

Dear Adrift in Advice,

I really don’t recommend that you listen to anyone who can’t demonstrate to you their own success. Mostly, advice from friends, while well-intentioned, can lead you down the wrong path. It would be better for you to meet with a professional who is trained to answer your questions and give you good advice. Check their credentials, and ask them all the questions CFP(r) Board recommends on their website, https://www.cfp.net/
